This Saturday, June 13th, the Jackson Soccer Club will be hosting a charity soccer game between the recreation league coaches and the travel to coaches to benefit the “Our Town” Project which collects items needed by our troops fighting in two wars overseas, particularly those troops who come from the Jackson area. ”The game was born on the heels of a charity game we had about a monty ago which benefited the Jackson Food Pantry.” said Jonathan Wood, Recreation Commissioner for the league “At that game, we collected enough food to fill the back of a truck and did some good for local folks who are having a tough time. We decided to give the charity idea another go.”
Jackson Soccer Club president, Ande Weathers proposed the idea of hosting a game for the troops and Mr. Wood ran with the idea, which is now less than one week away. On hand at Saturday’s game will be members of the U.S. Armed Forces, a color guard from a local boy scout troop and the National Anthem will be sung by Kellie Hoyt, a member of our club who has sung the National Anthem for the Lakewood Blue Claws. The club has also sent out invitations to Mayor Reina and the township council members. Denise Allmann from the “Our Town Project” will be on hand to speak about the program and help collect items.
The game will take place on Saturday, June 13th at 7:00 PM at the Jackson Justice Complex Field 1. Pre game activities will start at 6:45 PM.
Some of the items our men and women overseas could use include toothbrushes and toothpaste, eye drops, femine hygiene products, stick deodorant, chapstick, sunscree, q-tips, gum, instant powdered drink mix, hard candy, playing cards, international phone cards, current DVD’s, pens, paper, notecards, stamps and other comfort items not readily available in war torn locations such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
Any resident who has a loved one, family member or friend serving our military overseas, please contact Carol Blake a jerzgram@aol.com and send her their names and addresses and a personalized package will be sent to them to take what they need and share the rest with their units. You can also send this information via fax to 732-928-6326 or call Carol Blake at 732-928-6099. In the past, our troops have sent thanks to our community for the assistance.
