Atlanta, GA – Far from the penthouse suites of New York City and the lavish multimillion dollar accomdations he is accustomed to, Bernard Madoff has found a new home at the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia. The prison houses medium security male inmates and has a detention center for pre-trial and holdover inmates and a satellite camp for minimum security male inmates according to the Federal Beaurau of prisons website.
It was primarily used as a detention center for Cuban refugees from the Mariel Boatlift who were ineligible for release into American society. The prison is located in southeast Atlanta at the junction of Boulevard and McDonough Boulevard. Its population as of July 6, 2006 is 1909 in the penitentiary and 554 in the camp.
Most people expected Madoff to serve his sentence which ends on November 14, 2139 to be in a comfy cozy white collar suite prison, but the USP in Atlanta was once hosted a riot. In November 1987, the Cuban detainees, tired of indefinite confinement, rioted for 11 days.
Madoff is not the first person of celebrity status to serve in the prison. Al Capone spent a brief layover here before being transferred to Alcatrazz. Former Major League Baseball player Willie Aikens served time at USP and organized crime boss John Gotti made his rounds in the Atlanta prison.
