Cablevision Systems Corp. has announced it has successfully activated Optimum WiFi wireless Internet access in commercial and high-traffic locations in Ocean County and the surrounding area. The Ocean County deployment is part of Cablevision’s larger initiative to provide Optimum WiFi wireless Internet access across its service area as a free enhancement for its Optimum Online high-speed Internet customers. Optimum WiFi is now available in Chadwick Beach, Jackson, Lakewood, Lavallette, Normandy Beach, Ortley Beach, Pelican Island, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park and South Seaside Park. In addition, Cablevision has partnered with Comcast to provide WiFi service for both companies’ customers at the Bay Head NJ Transit station platform and parking lot.
Already the largest and most advanced consumer WiFi network in the nation, Optimum WiFi offers Cablevision’s Optimum Online customers free wireless Internet access at speeds of up to 3 Mbps downstream and 1.5 Mbps upstream – more than twice as fast as expensive data plans offered by cell phone providers over 3G networks. Cablevision customers have already used Optimum WiFi more than a million times, as usage and awareness of the free product enhancement continues to increase.
“We are pleased to announce that Ocean County is now part of the nation’s largest and most advanced consumer WiFi network – Optimum WiFi,” said Kevin Curran, Cablevision’s senior vice president of wireless product development. “With service now activated across our New Jersey service areas, free, fast and broadly available wireless internet access is already becoming a popular enhancement for our Optimum Online customers who are taking their home or office broadband connections ‘on the go,’ to do things like update Twitter, upload photos, or just check e-mail.”
Current Optimum Online customers using laptop computers and portable WiFi-enabled devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch and BlackBerry can access Optimum WiFi through a simple sign-on screen. Once a customer logs into the service by entering their Optimum User ID and password, the network delivers fast speeds of up to 3.0 Mbps downstream and up to 1.5 megabits-per-second upstream. An estimated 300 million WiFi-enabled consumer electronics devices were shipped last year – a figure that is expected to grow to 1 billion by 2012.
