The hidden gem of Honduras

By

Roatan, Honduras – On my first trip to Honduras, I didn’t know what to expect.  I was an illinformed American with visions of worn out beach side shanties on stilts as my only other impression of Central America had been Belieze City. I figured Honduras surely must be a notch down.   I admit, I was cautious about bringing my family to Roatan because of the troubles of mainland Honduras.

I had originally written this article before June’s travel advisory from the U.S. State Department, but felt compelled to finish it in hopes that the advisory will soon be lifted and tourists can feel comfortable about going to one of the most inconspicuous jewels of the Caribbean.

Arriving in Roatan was also an eye opening experience as a truck load of rifle wielding men drove past our cab on the way to the beach.  The driver assured us that they were nothing to worry about and the island was a safe place for a vacation.

Roatan is an island off the coast of Honduras, relatively free from the political strife of the mainland, but still, no more dangerous than any major city in America and far more beautiful than anything our country has to offer.

The best of the best in Roatan is Tabyana beach.  You never hear about Tabyana on the Travel Channel, but in my travels to over 20 different countries in the Caribbean, South and Central America, it is by far the top beach in the Caribbean.. in my opinion.   It’s far superior to Magen’s Bay in St. Thomas which usually receives the nod from the mainstream media.

Tabyana is clean, safe, lush and gorgeous.  The water is perfect, the beach is perfect and at each end of the beach there are cliffs and coral deposits where you can see exactly what the high priced diver/snorkel charter excursions see, but just a few feet into the water.

If you happen for some reason to be headed in the direction of Honduras in the near future, check out Tabyana beach in Roatan. You won’t be disappointed.
