Trenton, NJ – Governor Jon Corzine’s Chief of Staff Mark Matzen recently sent out a memo to state workers that urged them to write borderline false statements in support of the Governor’s failed policies that were supposed to create jobs in New Jersey, but has led to the highest rate of unemployment in New Jersey’s recent history. This week, in New Jersey, unemployment climbed to 9.8%, but the Corzine campaign team urged state workers to forge ahead with the crafting of “creative” messages.
The messages, drafted by state workers, to aid the Corzine campaign in his reelection bid are intended to be used as political propoganda to mislead the public into thinking Corzine’s policies are having positive effects on the state of employment in New Jersey.
In the memo, Matzen admittedly confesses “I know that it may be a stretch for some of you, but please be creative”, urging the state workers to write creative marketing material for the Corzine team’s campaign. All of this is being done at the expense of taxpayers. While state workers should be working hard to restore jobs, they have been instructed by Matzen to instead figure out ways to make New Jersey’s current financial dire straits seem appealing to voters.
Matzen’s memo suggests a gross misappropriation of state workers and resources and could prove a costly measure for taxpayers who are now funding the Corzine campaign through taxes paid to state workers urged to work on the project.
Todd Porter said of this memo “It amazes me how low Corzine has gone to garner support. Since he’s unable to create jobs, he’s forcing state working to fabricate stories, or else they might end up like the rest of us, unemployed and clamoring for Jon Corzine’s head.” Porter represents the Jackson Township Republican Club which has been strongly behind the effort to “Take Back New Jersey”.
The club has enorsed local republican candidates Mike Reina for mayor of Jackson Township and Ken Bressi for councilman in Jackson. The club this week opened up their local GOP headquarters near the intersection of County Line Road and Brewers Bridge Road in Jackson. Porter says the headquarters is ready to accomodate local residents seeking lawn signs for Chris Christie and local republican candidates. (www.jacksonnjgop.com)
This memo sent the state’s GOP into action by requesting the release of all Corzine staff documents and emails according to an article yesterday at PolitickerNJ. You can see a transcript of the memo below.

SUBJECT: Next week theme….Next week, we are asking all departments to come up with an event or two or three that show job creation or economic development in the private sector. I know that it might be a stretch for some of you, but please be creative. While many programs might not created jobs directly, they do have some connection to job creations either through training, giving money to sustain employment or create demand for workers. Many of you already have events on your scheduled for next week that can be shaped into a job creation message.
We want to use the events to build on the announcement of two consecutive months of positive job creation in the private sector in New Jersey. The message for these event will be that the economic policies of Governor Jon Corzine are working.
–His first in the nation economic stimulous bill created or saved thousands of jobs while protecting our most vulnerable citizens.
–His economic recovery package he recently signed is already working in creating and retaining jobs by providing the fuel to ignite businesses.
–JSC created InvestNJ which rewarded job creation with a $3,000 incentive to companies that create jobs.
–Governor Corzine just announced an incentive package that will pay businesses for part of a new employee’s salary if that employee had exausted their unemployment benefits. Please get your event proposals to Tim Lydon by COB Thursday. He is coordinating the week’s events to ensure geographic diversity and timing. I know that you are all very busy, but these targeted events hep get our message out.
These events are designed to create stories in weeklies as well as daily new papers, so please have your press folks touch the weeklies in whatever areas you are doing events.
Thanks again for all your help on this… It is important. It gives the Governor a lot of support knowing you are out there letting the “real” people know the good things we have accomplished.
