Fire alarm causes evacuation of Jackson Liberty High School again

Jackson, NJ – Jackson Township emergency crews were once again dispatched to Jackson Liberty High School in response to a fire alarm.  The alarm went off near the end of first period this morning on a day when students arrived to school after a two hour delayed opening due to an overnight snow accumulation.

Once again, as happened during the January fire incident at the school, students were evacuated into the parking lots until firefighters brought the situation under control.  Once the situation was contained, the students were moved into the gym to escape the cold outside before eventually returning to class.

Once in the gym, students report  the situation went out of control as multiple fights broke out and a snowball fight ensued between the restless teenagers.   A student from the school said  of the situation “It was not a good day at Jackson Liberty High School.”

Witnesses claim the fire was started by a smoke produced by a chemistry experiment.  The smoke condition in the chemistry class initiated the sprinkler systems and the fire alarm.   On January 22nd, a fire in a second floor heating unit caused an evacuation of the school until the smoke could be ventilated from the school.   Today’s incident was the second emergency evacuation from the school in the past twelve days.

According to my Liberty student, a Chem teacher started a fire in his lab while working under a hood. Again. As for the fights? He says that in one, a knife was apparently drawn.

yes there was a knief anfd i was there i am a student it was hurribal and the teachers pretty much put the school on lock down students where not aload out of the classes.and you had to beg to go to the bathroom

Does Jackson Township have English Teachers? Glad my property tax dollars are hard at work in this district. =\

        • Jackson Resident says:

I have to speak up on behalf of the teachers. My son has had an *excellent* experience at JLHS with the English Dept – Borelli, Opaleski and Maloney are three superb teachers (those are the only ones he has had) who teach rigorously and don’t let their kids slide through. Of course, they’re also Honors & AP teachers, so… But it is not always the fault of the teacher. Students – and parents – need to take some responsibility. Perhaps more than the teachers.

      • Jackson Resident says:

Jackson student… Wow. I’m not saying this to put you down, but as a parent. Please, please spend some time focusing on your Lang classes. The results really will help you in the future. Really.

        • jackson student says:

well sorry i had to type this really fast when i was in a class.By the way i have honors english

          • Jackson Resident says:

Uuuh… you DO realize that you’re not supposed to have your phone on or in use during class, right? Tsk tsk.

The fire sprinkler went off and flooded the chemistry room. the teacher was trying to perform an experiment. looks like the fire department got there quick and was able to get the students into the gym. dont know anyrthing about a fight.

  3. Ocean Grove says:

Wow, no offense but that JLHS comment is pretty poor in grammar. Here’s hoping the english program can get him/her on the right track.

If a knife was drawn, wouldn’t that be more of a headline, not the fire alarm itself?

Might be just a rumor. When I was at JMHS years ago facts would get strewn pretty easily/quickly.

    • NJ News says:

The communcations person at the school district confirmed 1fight, but said there were no weapons involved and there was no school lockdown.

      • jackson student says:

Ha.”no school lockdown” TRY being there you where not aload out of the classes without begging and every teacher in that school was talking on how the school is on lockdown so i think you should try alittle harder to get your facts.

        • Donna Tello says:

You need to spend more time in class and not be concerned about how to get out. I think the word you were trying to spell is “allowed” – to permit or allow. I could have even seen the improper use of the word “aloud”, -meaning to speak out loud.

Based on your claim, maybe “aload” is really the best word, but you forgot the space. Because it sounds to me like your post is a load.

          • Donna Tello says:

How could I have missed this the first time?

“TRY being there you where not aload out of the classes”

            We already discussed “aload”

Let’s move on to the sentence makes no sense.

“Where” is also incorrect. You were probably looking to use the contraction for we are which is we’re.

            • jackson student says:

ok you need to stop correcting a kid im dropping this now your really makeing me mad thank you for achieving being total jerk to a 15 year old and thanks for makeing jackson look bad.If your a parent you would understand but at my point of view you like to make people mad! this is’nt even about me its about the school so please im asking you nicely stop thank you

        • NJ News says:

As was posted, that is only the “official” response from the district, that there was no knife and no lockdown. Whether or not the “official” word is true is a completely different topic of course which we can fill many pages of discussion with.

    • Jackson Resident says:

My kid knows one of those involved. And it would not surprise me at all to have it downplayed. Color me jaded.

  4. J.S.W says:

At this rate, JMHS is going to outlast JLHS. Anyway, as far as the teacher with the chemistry experiment goes, this would be the third time in my two years at JLHS that the teacher in question caused an evacuation. xD

    • Jackson Resident says:

      >At this rate, JMHS is going to outlast JLHS.

Just have to roll my eyes at this. JMHS has its share of problems.

    For more of the story:

It was a delayed opening and the last review day we had for finals. We were sent out to the parking lots for about twenty minutes whereas the week prior we remained outside in the cold for-not exaggerating-an hour.

The teachers and staff proceeded to “kindly” push the students onto the snow covered field. Many students didn’t have coats with them. Snowball fights did ensue. They finally moved us all to the gym and loaded the whole school onto the bleachers. After five minutes or so we proceeded to start the wave.

A physical fight brokeout in one of the bleachers. It was rumored the fight was planned for the following Friday, but the students inolved decided to seize the moment.

    For your information-
I am not a student in Honors English.

    Yet.
