Jackson, NJ – Over the past week, students at the Lucy N. Holman Elementary School participated in the Souper Bowl, an event to raise donations of soup for the Jackson Food Pantry. As students brought in their soup donations, they could choose to put their cans in either the New Orleans Saints or Indianapolis Colts marked bins located in the school foyer.
Children placed their soup in the bin of the team they wanted to win in this weekend’s Super Bowl matchup in Miami. The final score at Holman Elementary was Saints 302 and Colts 258, but we’ll have to wait until Sunday night to see if the kids at Holman successfully predicted the winner of the actual NFL matchup. In all, 560 cans of soup were collected, so regardless of the outcome Sunday, all of the kids at Holman went home winners this weekend.
After school on Friday, school board member Theresa Schiazza and first grade teacher Elizabeth Wendolek rounded up a handful of student volunteers to load the boxes of soup into their cars and to deliver their bounty to the Jackson Food Pantry.

The children stuck around and helped organize their offerings and stock the shelves at the Food Pantry.
The Jackson Food Panty distributes food and other necessary items once a month to residents who have registered for assistance. They also give emergency food to any resident in such need. The Food Pantry is located at 10 Don Connor Boulevard, in Department of Public Works’ building. I would like to express my sincerely thanks to all the students, facility and staff who participated in the Holman SOUPerbowl, and especially the ones who stayed to put it all away! The continued support of the Jackson Women of Today Food Pantry by local schools, businesses and residents allow us to provide food for the hundreds of families who have found themselves food insecure, meaning they have uncertain access to sufficient food. The JWOT consider it our honor and privilege to be able to assist these families every month.
