New Jersey High School Wrestling State Finals: Jackson Memorial should be number 1

By

Jackson, NJ - Six schools ended the day today with state championships.    In Group 1, Paulsboro defeated Kittatinny 37-25.  In Group 2, Brearly won against West Essex 42-27.  In Group III, High Point slipped out a win against SouthPlainfield 30-28. In Group IV, Jackson Memorial got theirs against Phillipsburg 34-24.    In the non-public divisions, Delbarton crushed Bishop 55-12 in Non-Public A.  Camden Catholic steamrolled DePaul 67-3.

What do many of today’s champions have in common?   Most of them lost during the season to Jackson Memorial.    A few weeks ago, Jackson Memorial defeated Group III champions High Point 31-28.    Last week, they crushed Non Public B Champs Camden Catholic 43-18.    Back in January they defeated Non Public A Delbarton 39-20.

Yet, tomorrow morning, every one’s eyes will be on the Star Ledger, to see the final rankings which will probably not change the top 3 after today’s action.   Awarding Jackson their rightfully deserved #1 won’t sell newspapers in the Star Ledger’s reading area.   However, it cannot be denied that of all the champions tonight, the only one to have beaten 3 out of 5 others this season is Jackson Memorial.    For some reason, the team has to eternally pay for an early season tie against South Plainfield which Jackson lost on an 8-6 bout criteria finish and an SCT loss to Southern.  They redeemed themselves of their SCT loss to Southern this morning, which left their season series against Southern at 2 wins and 1 loss.

Going one step further, Jackson has dominated the Top 20 this year.   Jackson has performed quite well against the top 20, in order:

#1 High Point W 31-28
#2 S. Plainfield T 31-31
#5 Delbarton W 39-20
#6 Southern Regional   2-1 on season
#11 Phillipsburg W 34-24
#15 Howell 36-21
#19 Raritan 43-15

It would be refreshing to see an honest Top 20 released Tuesday that takes the whole picture into consideration.  Jackson Memorial is the #1 school in New Jersey.  Their only other in state loss came at the hands of #2 South Plainfield and not only did they beat #1 High Point, they beat two of today’s other New Jersey champions.

In fact, I do believe some statisticians would argue that it’s numerically impossible for Jackson not to be #1.  Then when the coaches get together in 2 weeks, it would only be fitting to give the Jags what they rightfully deserve.
