Jackson police officer injured after car forced off road

By

On Saturday, March 12, 2011 at approximately 10:58 pm, Jackson Police Officer John Rodriguez was clearing from a service call on Brewers Bridge Road when a small dark colored car passed his patrol unit at a high rate of speed.  As Officer Rodriguez activated the emergency lights on the patrol unit to attempt to conduct a motor vehicle stop with the vehicle, a second vehicle began to overtake Rodriguez’s patrol unit from behind.

It appeared that the two vehicles had been racing on Brewers Bridge Road when they came upon Officer Rodriguez.  Officer Jeremy Felder, who happened to be traveling toward Officer Rodriguez’s location was able to record the second vehicle’s speed in excess of 90 miles per hour in the 35 mile per hour zone on Brewers Bridge Road.  This second vehicle then passed Officer Rodriguez’s car in the no passing zone, drove head on at Officer Felder’s car and forced him off the road.  As the second car was trying to avoid the head on collision with Officer Felder, it swerved back into Rodriguez’s lane, forcing him off the road where he struck a traffic sign and stopped in a yard.

Officer Rodriguez only suffered minor injury from the windshield which was shattered by the traffic sign going through the passenger side of the patrol vehicle.  He was checked by Howell First Aid at the scene and declined further treatment.  The patrol unit had to be towed from the scene.  Felder was not injured and there was no damage to his vehicle.

Vehicle one was described only as a small, dark colored, possibly imported vehicle.  It possibly had halogen style, blue tint headlights.  Vehicle two was described as a blue vehicle, possibly an Acura, with what appeared to be New Jersey license plates.  As Officer Felder stopped to check on Officer Rodriguez, both vehicles fled the scene at a high rate of speed toward West Countyline Road.  Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department at 732-928-1111.
