APP: Politics & Real Estate a Toxic Mix

October 14, 2009 by NJ News

In an editorial dated August 19, 2009 the Asburry Park Press addressed the “boundless” conflict of interest that exists when local real professionals hold elective office…  Real estate and elective office are a toxic mix. The potential conflicts of interest are boundless. Decisions about how a property is to be zoned and utilized have a major bearing on its value. That’s why recusals are imperative. (those that are real estate professionals) have no business participating in discussions on how (property) should be used. Yet in Jackson we have a perennial politician, Mike Kafton, who owns multiple township properties in his name, with friends, family members and business partners.  He owns a real estate office and a title company in Jackson as well.  As Council President he also gets to appoint the members of several committees and boards, such as the Zoning Board, that directly decide on the future use of Jackson land.  Additionaly, he makes appointments to numerous other committees that are not as openly linked to his business interests.  For example, he sits on the Economic Development Advisory Committee, the Open Space Preservation Trust Fund, the Rent Leveling Board and the Mobile Home Park Advisory Committee. The editorial gave as example a recent situation in Waretown where the seated mayor failed to remove himself from discussions… Mayor Robert Kraft of Ocean Township (Waretown) says there was no conflict between his owning a piece of land in the town center zone and his participation in discussions, as a committeeman and member of the municipal redevelopment authority, about how it would be developed.  Two months after he was sworn in, a new master plan was approved that recommended creation of a town center zone that included Kraft’s property. Over the next several years, Kraft repeatedly voted on matters pertaining to town center property, including his own. Clearly there is great potential for abuse, and Mr. Kafton can, in accordance with township code, appoint a representative or designee to these committees in his place.  The question here is not if he should do so, but why he took these positions in the first place.

Kafton: Campaign More Important Than our Flag

October 11, 2009 by NJ News

On September 26, Jackson Township held its annual Jackson Day. I found this event to be fun with a nice parade, good food and interesting civic clubs, crafts and businesses. It was also very informative about Democratic mayoral candidate Mike Kafton. I was reviewing the information at the Democrat Party booth when I saw the American flag taken down and replaced with a huge sign reading Mike Kafton/Howard Tilis. I inquired as to why Old Glory was taken down and was told “Mike Kafton orders.” I have no problem with Kafton having a sign but I wanted to know why our flag was now nowhere to be seen? The response was “Mike feels it is more important people see his name.” How dare he! No one is above our American flag! In the past, I heard stories about Kafton passing school buses with emergency lights flashing as handicapped children were getting on or off. The list goes on. Many folks told me that Mike Kafton is all about Mike Kafton. After watching the removal of the American flag for a Kafton/Tilis sign, an act ordered by Kafton, I also findKafton is all about Kafton
