Are stay at home parents sacrificing?

June 5, 2009 by Editorial Writer

By Becky Parr

I am the stay at home mother of five children, four of whom are biologically mine. I’m asked quite often how the heck we get by. I almost never give an honest answer. To do so would only make the person asking the question feel belittled and make me sound superior and that’s not what I would ever want.

When I look at the world around me today I see so many lost little faces. Little people feeling disconnected and big people feeling like they missed out on something but knowing not quite what. I have friends who work fifty to sixty hours a week. They take two vacations a year and have two new cars. Their children all have the best video games and computers. They are very stressed people. I know parents that only work forty hours a week. Both parents mind you. They also have at least one new car and massive credit card debt to get their kids the latest games and phones and computers. They are very stressed people. The thing I find amusing is where these children can be found. Not where the brand new computers are, ours is many years and many repairs old. Not where the latest video game equipment is, we don’t own even one, wait I might still have an Atari. Yep, you guessed it, they’re all at my house, lamenting about their horrid math teacher or gushing about the hot guy in 3rd period while I’m stepping over a toddler and a husky (my pound rescue and my comic relief)trying to fit 2lbs of pasta into a pot designed for much less because my 5 year old is using the big pot for a homemade “science experiment.”. The children wandering in and out of our home range from 18 months to 20 years. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We live comfortably, no new cars, no state of the art electronics but we’re not walking or taking the bus and we have cable. How we manage to get by is very simple, we prioritized. I’m not sacrificing anything by staying home to raise my children. Even if I did have to take the bus, have no TV and do without meat in my meal plans 6 of the 7 days a week it still wouldn’t be a sacrifice. (If that sounded a little specific, it was, we have had to do those things and I’d do them again, happily. Ooooh, there’s a word not used very often in conjunction with doing without.)

One of the little ones spent the night a while back. She was about 4 at the time. We got up on Saturday morning and took inventory. The only thing in the house we had enough of to feed us all was the makings for French Toast. She asked to call her mother about half way thru, I said sure and overheard her call. She had called home absolutely amazed that there was another way to make French Toast. Mom. she said, did you know that some French Toast is made with bread and eggs? Aunt Becky didn’t even put it in the toaster! Sacrifice? Please. My children will be raised with my beliefs and morals, not whoever the daycare center has making minimum wage pretending to give a rats ass about my children. I’ll know them well enough to see warning signs of future trouble and they’ll know me and my expectations. It occurs to me that instead of asking how much a person would sacrifice to be a stay at home Mother/Father, the question should be do you know what you’re sacrificing by not being a stay at home Mother/Father.

As I sit here writing these things I know that I’m sounding a wee bit defensive. Yeah, I said wee bit, problem? Huh, well, Huh? OK I keeed, I keeed! This comes from a part of me that has listened to women in our government as well as media and business people that make raising ones own children sound like a job that’s not worth the time of a well educated, motivated individual. Like by choosing to take complete responsibility for what I have brought into this world is somehow hurting the the cause known as Womens Rights. I for one don’t think getting out from under a big hairy knuckled thumb to replace it with a dainty well manicured one is what the original bra burners had in mind.

Magens Bay top 10 beach or top 10 myth

June 1, 2009 by NJ News

Cruise News Network – Magen’s Bay on St. Thomas, an island in the U.S. Virgin Islands is commonly listed among the top 10 beaches in the world.  Is it really a top 10 beach or is it a top 10 myth driven by commercial sponsorship and hype?   The answer is somewhere in the middle.

On my first trip to St. Thomas, the weather was uncooperatively miserable the entire stay.   Fortunately last year, I got a second chance to visit the crown Jewel of the U.S. Virgin Islands.  This time, I took no chances and headed right towards Magen’s Bay with the family.

In between visits, I had watched a show that claimed Magen’s Bay as one of the top 10 beaches in the world, so I was pretty psyched to get in the van and drive to the north side of the island to see if Magen’s Bay lived up to the hype claimed by the Travel Channel.

Magen’s Bay is a well protective cove on the northern side of St. Thomas and is well protected from the elements.   It is a public park administered by the Magens Bay Authority which manages the beach and shops here and also nearby Lindquist Beach, which was private until recently.

The cost to get on the beach is $4.  There is  souvenier shop, snack shop and bathroom facilities on premise.

I do have to say, Magens Bay was a nice stop, but I would not go as far as putting it in the top 10 beaches in the world.  I can honestly say, I’ve been to 10 better beaches.  There’s something that is all too touristy about Magens Bay.   The beach is narrow, packed with Cruise Ship travelers there for the day and the water was not all that great.   Locals had told me we had just missed a tropical storm which stirred the sediment in the bay and that it’s usually much clearer.    The water also had a very high salt concentration which the kids cried about it being “too spicy” when they swallowed it.

All in all, Magens Bay was a nice outing, but better, more secluded and not so tourist packed spots can be found on St. Thomas.   If you are spending time on St. Thomas, you owe yourself to at least visit Magens Bay, but I wouldn’t spend every day here.

Jackson Township Board of Education seeking bids to resurface JMHS track

May 29, 2009 by NJ News

Jackson, NJ – The Jackson Township Board of Education has published a public notice seeking bids to resurface the track around the high school football field at John J. Munley Field.  The track is showing obvious signs of age, wear and tear and while urgent refinishing may not be needed right away, this old track needs to be laid to rest very soon.   Here is the legal notice which was posted and below are some photos taken this afternoon.   Discuss whether or not you think this track needs to be repaired.  I’m not an outdoor track professional, but I agree with the BOE that maintenance is needed.    What do you think?

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Education of the Township of Jackson, County of Ocean, State of New Jersey, will receive sealed bids on June 11, 2009 at 1:00PM in the Office of the Board Secretary, Jackson Township Board of Education, Administration Building, 151 Don Connor Boulevard, Jackson, New Jersey. Bids will be opened and read publicly for the 2008/2009 school year requirements for the following: Track & Field Event Resurfacing Jackson Memorial High School

The starting line at the Jackson Memorial High School track appears to have been host to many many years of use.

Drainage also appears to be an issue as the outside of the track in many areas is retaining water instead of the water permeating through and away to the sides.

There are several spots in the track that have sunken as the ground below compacted and many potholes waiting for the unsuspecting teenage ankle to break.

The outside edges of the track are showing visible weather and stress cracks which will only grow worse as time goes on.

I’d hate to be the kid who didn’t see this one coming.

Lucy N. Holman students take over local McDonalds

Last night dozens of Lucy N. Holman students took over the McDonalds on County Line Road in Jackson at a H.O.P.E. sponsored fundraiser.   It was loud, it was crazy, but the children all had a great time raising money, playing with friends, running wild and eating some healthy Micky D’s.     I just wish I had remembered to bring the camera when it was packed but these are pictures from around 7:30pm or so, just before the end of the event.    Unfortunate was the unsuspecting few who wanted a quick and quiet meal at McDonalds to find out the restaurant had been transformed into a Chuck E. Cheese for a few hours.  Not an open seat was available in this packed house event.  Another great and fun fundraiser by the Holman H.O.P.E. PTO.

Kids and parents line up to make purchases.
Holman kids sign their name on poster boards.

Too cute!

St. Aloysius Summer Carnival next weekend in Jackson NJ

May 18, 2009 by NJ News

Correction, the title erroneously reported the carnival as this week, but is next week.

The 2009 St. Al’s Summer Carnival is just a few weeks away and this year looks to follow the lead of previous years as being the best carnival event in Jackson.    The carnival will run from Wednesday, May 27 and run through Saturday May 30.   Hours of operation will be 6:00-10:00 PM Wednesday through Friday and noon to 10pm on Saturday.

As in previous years there will be assorted amusement rides, games of chance, dj’s, live bands and fair style crafts and food available .    This year’s music lineup includes  The Backbeat, The Roustabouts, The Fuzzpops, The Red Beret and The Strictly 60’s Band.    From noon to 3pm on Saturday DJ Davy will be spinning the tunes.

On Wednesday and Thursday, you can purchase a $25 pay one price wristband for unlimited rides.

The St. Al’s Carnival is one of the many things we look forward to each year.  It’s a well planned production for a very good cause and has become a Jackson tradition.   If you have kids, this is the place to be between May 27 through May 30.

Why do you live in Jackson?

May 17, 2009 by Phil Stilton

Why do you live in Jackson? That’s a question I get often from friends and old neighbors from Toms River when they learn that I have abandonded the town I grew up in, supported and was active in. Over the years, Toms River has become what the North Jersey and New York City transplants have made it. A sprawling suburban community experiencing similar problems to the places they had left.

When I was young, growing up and going to school in Toms River, it wasn’t much different than Jackson is today. Hooper Avenue and Fisher Blvd. were 2 lane roads, heavily wooded with spots of commerce here and there. Route 37 was the equivelant to County Line Road and the summer traffic was akin to the summer traffic we see at Great Adventure.

We had horse farms, cattle farms and agriculture farms in North Dover, yes it was always Dover Township back then, but the only Dover we referred to as kids were the Dover Rovers. Local hardware stores thrived before Loews and Home Depot. Our local post office was actually a desk inside one of these hardware stores. On weekends, kids would hang out in the woods, build bonfires and ride our bikes, quads and cars through woods without worries.

Slowly those woods and hardware stores started disappearing and chain stores and chain restaurants began taking over. More kids started having New York accents in school and eventually we gave way to the tract developments and senior citizens communities which eventually took over the entire town.

I’m not afraid or embarrassed to say that after New Yorkers, senior citizens were the biggest downfall to Toms River. Together, they both wanted to bring some of what they left into our community. They came to Toms River for the seclusion and country-esque living, but they weren’t happy with well water, they weren’t happy driving 3 miles to the convenience store and they weren’t happy with just about everything in their new home.

On every corner, Brooklynites talked about how the shore is backwards and there’s no good restaurant and they live in a hick town. Slowly their influence grabbed footholds in local politics and business and gone were two acre building requirements in North Dover and the town began to look like a suburb of Staten Island.

Eventually, I couldn’t take it anymore. With the murder of one of our neighbors, the organ player at our corner church just houses down after I had personally looked the killer in the eye moments before it happened as he forcefully peddled magazine subscriptions door to door, we decided Toms River was no longer the town for us. The year before we left to come to Jackson, Toms River had many murders which dropped it from it’s yearly position in the top 25 communities to live in America. Drug shootings at the nearby notell motel, ex cops killing entire families and now one so close to home where it could have been any of my neighbors or worse, my wife and daughter had I not been home that day were all key factors in our decision to leave.

To my surprise, not only is Jackson ecologically and environmentally walking in the exact same shoes as Toms River of 20 years ago, Jackson is making the exact same mistakes as Toms River of 25 years ago. Our insatiable thirst for ratables, out of control senior housing developments, low incoming housing projects on the horizon, strip malls and drug stores at every corner and the same old fight between locals and carpetbaggers. Once again its the good old boys vs. the new kids on the block.

I have seen where Toms River has gone and I see Jackson heading down the same path, but only worse. There are forces in Jackson who have lost sight of why they have moved here and will slowly destroy the town. Like Toms River, we will soon match them in pharmacies per capita. Do we need a Jackson Crossings at every intersection? Do we need a Starbucks? Do we need an Olive Garden or TGI Fridays? Does Jackson really need a movie theater? What price should we pay to have these businesses?

Why do you live in Jackson and how do you see Jackson’s future?

After watching tonight’s Republican Gubernatorial debate, I can’t help but think Chris Christie is the man for the job and that he is  somebody who would be on Jackson Township’s side as the Governor of our state.

Many of the topics Chris Christie covered tonight seem to be in line with the bipartisan desires of local politicians.  They seem to be things we need to take our township back from the Abbott districts, from COAH, from the DEP and most importantly tax cuts instead of increases for residents.

While John Corzine has taken away tax rebates to all but seniors, Christie instead spoke of reducing government spending in order to restore tax rebates to homeowners.

When talking about the abbot districts and what to do for students whose schools have failed them, Lonegan talked about vouchers and spending more money for children to get an education.   Christie hit hard and close to home for Jackson residents and claimed “The Abbot Experiment has failed” and expressed his commitment to fixing the problems created by the failed Abbott districts in our state that takes hard earned tax dollars from residents in towns like Jackson and gives that money to “less fortunate” towns like Lakewood.  That money was supposed to help those districts compete and provide a quality education, but has instead lead to out of control spending in many districts who received the funding.  This leaves towns like Jackson with schools that are falling apart, kids learning in trailers and school boards making poor decisions such as charging seniors to park to compensate for lost tax revenue under this program.

COAH?  Christie said that COAH was a fundamentally flaw concept that is holding back growth.  In Jackson COAH is promoting growth, but very irresponsible growth that will put a burden on our town and our taxes for years to come.

Chris Christie also supports maintaining what open space is left in New Jersey.  Jackson happens to have a lot of open space in which the folks currently in Trenton have their greedy little eyes set on, trying to force us to build more low income housing under COAH forcing us to change the dynamic of our town.

There are many people in our town on both sides who will always ride the party line right off the cliff, but when you think responsibly about the future of Jackson from the state level, there’s really only one politician who seems to be in our corner and that man is Chris Christie.

Democrats will undoubtedly support John Corzine as he continues to support legislation and policy that will eventually destroy the very fabric of our community, such is always the way in politics.    I just don’t see at this point in time how anybody who truly cares about the future of Jackson will be able to continue to publicly support John Corzine and be able to look the taxpayers of Jackson in in the eyes and say “I’m working for you”.

The unfortunate part of this story is that I cannot vote in the Republican primary because I am not registered with a party and will not.  I will always back the right guy and so far it’s turning out to look like Chris Christie.  I’ve always been very socially and environmentally liberal, but militarily and financially very conservative which really doesn’t sit well with either party, so I continue to ride the center line and voting the person, the agenda and the future and not the party.

What are your thought’s on tonight’s debate and Chris Christie?

Yosi headlines BlueClaws kids expo tonight

Yosi, aka Yosi Levin, local children’s rock star extraordinaire and member of the kids quartet, The Superdads, will be headlining tonight’s  kids expo at the Blue Claws Stadium in Lakewood.

Never heard of Yosi?  Then you probably don’t have kids.  Yosi is the local equivalent of the Wiggles.  Ok, sorry, that’s an insult to Yosi.   He’s the Sex Pistols for toddlers.  He’s the Kiss for kids.  He’s Nirvana for the newborns.    Enough of that, the event is held yearly and is a great place to see local children’s businesses and new products for kids.

So pack up the kids and head to Lakewood for Baseball and Kids Bop!  And remember, kids eat for free at all Blue Claws games.

104 Things for kids to do this summer in New Jersey

Kids love trains.  Plan your next day trip around a train ride.  Take a train ride into New York City for a fun day there or maybe just a local trip.     In the summer, New Jersey Transit has a great shoreline train route that goes from Point Pleasant to Matawan and beyond.   Stop off at any one of the shore points along the way.

Point Pleasant has a great beach and boardwalk.   Asbury Park and Long Branch have newly renovated beach fronts and Red Bank is a great shopping stop for a bit of downtown urban culture without going to the city.

There’s plenty of trainbound destinations around New Jersey suitable for families with young children.
