Surviving the first year of motherhood
June 5, 2009 by Editorial Writer
The First Year of Motherhood is a happy and joyous time filled with exciting events you will always remember. It can also however, be a stressful time filled with life altering events. Having a new baby inevitably changes your life. If you don’t learn to go with the flow you may very well start to question your sanity!
A person who is very organized and schedule oriented will often become overwhelmed by the life changes that take place after the birth of their new baby. Gone are the days of perfect routines and smoothly running schedules. The first year of motherhood is instead replaced by random feedings and diaper. This is when you suddenly have to stop, breathe and learn to go with the flow. It is the time to realize that things will get done when they get done. If your baby is a fussy sleeper through the night, and your starting to greatly resemble the walking dead, stop, slow down and take a nap when your baby takes a nap-even if its 2:00 in the afternoon.
Children will always require care, but during your first year of motherhood you will devote almost all of your time to constantly caring for them. If you don’t learn to roll with the punches, you will surely loose your mind! Do not let yourself fret over that stack of dishes in the sink because your baby is fussy and wants to be held. Those dishes aren’t going anywhere and will be there when you get to them. The easiest way to go with the flow is to learn to maximize your time. Just do a little bit here and there whenever you have the chance. Do not overwhelm yourself with trying to get everything done at once. Break your chores into small tasks. This will give you a sense of accomplishment each time you complete a chore. You may not get all of the laundry done in one day, but if you get just one load washed and dried, well then, you’ve accomplished something! If you can learn to get just a little bit at a time done, while the baby is napping or playing, you will be able to get more accomplished with a great deal less stress.
Learning how to go with the flow with your daily schedule can take some adjusting but it can be done! Don’t set a concrete schedule. Instead, make your plans tentative. Obviously there are some things, such as doctor’s appointments, that must be kept on time. However, many of the other tasks you perform can easily be switched around. Once you start to realize that life does not have to run on a die-hard schedule, you will more easily be able to enjoy your time with your baby and save yourself a great deal of stress.
The most important thing for new moms to remember is that the first year of motherhood will only happen once. The experiences that you have in the first year of motherhood will be memories that you will cherish forever. Learn to go with the flow so you can remember your first year of motherhood with happy memories and not as stress overload!

Jackson Township has gone to the dogs
June 5, 2009 by Phil Stilton

How things have changed in just one year. At this time last year, Mark Seda was our mayor and Jackson faced an uncertain future. The DEP was hounding the town about illegal access roads to Johnson Park, turf fields in the pinelands, but one year later and the only thing hounding Johnson Park these days are the dozens of dogs and dog owners at the new dog park.
The park opened last May and has been a barking success for our township. On any given afternoon in the late spring and summer, you can find dozens of dogs frolicking about inside the huge compound that was designed as a place for dog owners to come in, hang out and let their canines run free.
Previous to the park’s opening, choices were limited as many of our parks don’t allow dogs and none allowed unleashed dogs. Most dog owners in the area opted to go to the dog park in Lakewood.
The dog park in Jackson is located inside Johnson Park, behind the main parking lot, which is located on Kierych Memorial Drive, near the intersection of South Cooks Bridge Road and Manhattan Street. It’s one of the larger dog parks in Ocean County and there are two huge areas which seperate dogs by size.
There are a few rules to enter the park however. All dogs must show I.D., meaning they need to have a current dog license. Outside of the park, dogs must remain leashed. Once on the inside, pet owners obviously have to clean up after their dogs, male dogs must be neutered and females in heat are not allowed. Afterall, this is a public park and not Studio 54 for dogs. So if you didn’t know about the Jackson Dog park at Johnson Park already, take the pooches out for some fresh air once the rain stops!

Jackson Township Board of Education seeking bids to resurface JMHS track
Jackson, NJ – The Jackson Township Board of Education has published a public notice seeking bids to resurface the track around the high school football field at John J. Munley Field. The track is showing obvious signs of age, wear and tear and while urgent refinishing may not be needed right away, this old track needs to be laid to rest very soon. Here is the legal notice which was posted and below are some photos taken this afternoon. Discuss whether or not you think this track needs to be repaired. I’m not an outdoor track professional, but I agree with the BOE that maintenance is needed. What do you think?
Notice is hereby given that the Board of Education of the Township of Jackson, County of Ocean, State of New Jersey, will receive sealed bids on June 11, 2009 at 1:00PM in the Office of the Board Secretary, Jackson Township Board of Education, Administration Building, 151 Don Connor Boulevard, Jackson, New Jersey. Bids will be opened and read publicly for the 2008/2009 school year requirements for the following: Track & Field Event Resurfacing Jackson Memorial High School

The starting line at the Jackson Memorial High School track appears to have been host to many many years of use.

Drainage also appears to be an issue as the outside of the track in many areas is retaining water instead of the water permeating through and away to the sides.

There are several spots in the track that have sunken as the ground below compacted and many potholes waiting for the unsuspecting teenage ankle to break.

The outside edges of the track are showing visible weather and stress cracks which will only grow worse as time goes on.

I’d hate to be the kid who didn’t see this one coming.

Jackson Township students display their artwork in online art gallery

Jackson, NJ – 7 Jackson Township Schools have participated in Artsonia, an online art gallery in which parents, relatives and friends can browse through their children’s artistic creations in school and have them printed onto a very large selection of gift items from coffee mugs to holiday ornaments to mousepads.
15% of all sales goes directly back to the child’s school in just another way local school teachers are establishing creative revenue streams to compensate in the reduction of state funding our town receives and to offset years of budget cuts by the Board of Education.
Since 2007, nearly 30,000 works of art by Jackson children have gone online in Artsonia’s virtual online art gallery. The gallery now has over 5,000,000 works of art for purchase from students nationwide.
Six of the district’s schools currently participate in this fundraiser. Two of our schools are ranked in the top 5 schools in New Jersey. Remarkably, our very own Howard C. Johnson Elementary School is ranked #1 in New Jersey and 17 Nationwide. while the students at Lucy N. Holman Elementary are ranked #4 in the state and #29 in the nation overall in generating sales and members.
The program allows parents, friends and relatives to purchase artwork on many items including sweatshirts, t-shirts, holiday ornaments, keychains, mousepads and more.
See what our kids have been up to…

How did you spend your Memorial Day Weekend?
After living my whole life here at the Jersey Shore, I’ve become gun shy when it comes to embracing the weekend summer traffic, the Bennys. I’ve always avoided that term because I realize these Bennys, while responsible for traffic, litter, spikes in violent crimes and a strain on shore communities also provide a seasonal financial boost for towns all along the Jersey Shore, including Jackson, as home to Six Flags Great Adventure.
On Memorial Day weekend, we stay close and haven’t ventured out of Jackson. Saturday started as a yard maintenance day followed by an afternoon poolside then a private family bar-b-q. This morning has been a lazy morning and I had a few projects to complete by Tuesday, so it was a work morning for me. Hoping the good weather sticks around, we’re having a small family bar-b-q again and will spend the afternoon again poolside, pending forecasted thunderstorms. Tomorrow is still up in the air, we’ve turned down all Memorial Day party invites because these days everything is hard due to the 6 month old baby boy, so we’ll probably end up at one of the parks if the weather is nice and like every other day this weekend, end it with a poolside bar-b-q again.
I’m in no rush to start summer, we have 4 full months of great weather ahead of us and to rub elbows with out of towners on a hot sticky day isn’t my idea of relaxation. In the summer, I usually take off one day a week and work Saturdays, so we do all of our beach and boardwalk activities on that day when there’s not as many crowds. For us, Memorial Day weekend has become a time of rest from the busy winter and spring. During the summer I have a part time gig in GoKidsNJ that has me traveling all around the state nearly three times a week meeting with businesses and taking in the surroundings.
How did you spend your Memorial Day weekend?
Target’s “Take Charge of Education” fundraiser has donated over $45,000 Jackson Township Schools

Target Stores have donated over $45,000 to Jackson Township schools to date with their Take Charge of Education program. Through this program, parents can register their target card or checking account to automatically donate 1% of their total purchase directly to their child’s school at no cost to the parent or cardholder. So, for every $100 you spend, target will donate $1.
In these troubling economic times which have seen programs and services fall to the axe of budget cuts, this is just one way to raise money for your child’s school without a cost to taxpayers. In our district, Jackson Liberty High School parents have far out paced all other schools with over $13,500, or 30% of contributions donated since joining the program.
As Jackson residents, all of your target purchases currently help the districts of Freehold, Toms River and Howell, but this is a great way to take some of that money back for our own children. By encouraging parents, senior communities, members or sports and political organizations to sign up for the Red Card program, we can help alleviate some of the tax burdens and cuts we have had to face over the years in regards to public education.
Currently 458 people have signed up for the program which directly benefits Jackson Township Schools averaging $100 in contributions per person. Lets see if we can double this number and get the entire community involved. We all shop at target, there’s no reason not to enroll in this program.
How can you promote this program?

- Offer information for members who do not have or want a target card that the program can link directly to a checking account while the rewards still go to your school.
- Include a Take Charge of Education banner or link on your school, organization, business or charity website.
- Encourage members to speard the information to family members and friends, including aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Bengal Tigers, Bears and African Lions spotted in Ocean County Pine Barrens
May 21, 2009 by NJ News

GoKidsNJ – Did you know that Ocean County’s Pine Barrens is home to lions, tigers and bears? If you thought the Pine Barrens was void of exotic wildlife, think again. In Forked River, at the edge of the Pine Barrens, you can find PopCorn Park Zoo and Sanctuary, home to hundreds of exotic and domestic animals.
If you’re looking for a place to bring toddlers and younger children and don’t feel like traveling to the Bronx Zoo, Cape May or Philadelphia? Try the Popcorn Park Zoo and Sanctuary run by the Associated Humane Societies. This small zoo in New Jersey’s Pinelands was started in 1977 as an animal sanctuary for abandoned and abused animals. They eventually began taking in exploited farm animals and exotic wildlife and now house the largest collection of animals in Ocean County.
The zoo is home to over 200 rescued animals which range from roosters to bengal tigers. As you enter the park, you can purchase a box of popcorn which you can feed to all of the animals. Many of the domestic animals such as the pigs, goats, sheep and horses eagerly await handouts from parkgoers. As you walk around the park, geese, ducks and squirrels have become so accustomed to human presence that they will usually eat out of your hands.
Some of the more exotic animals in the park include Bengali, a bengal tiger and his three bengal tiger friends, a black bear, african lions, wallabies and monkeys. You can get close enough to all of the animals for some great picture taking and some great memories without the travel.

Farm animals at Popcorn Park Zoo include horses, cows, sheep, goats and rabbits. The steer at the park is huge! If you’ve never been up close and personal with a cow that is nearly eight feet tall, you’re in for a surprise.
The best thing about Popcorn Park is that these are not show animals purchased for display like at most zoos, they are animals that have been rescued from many different situations in which they were abused, neglected or exploited. The folks at the Associated Humane Society are offering these animals a second chance at life and the money you spend goes directly towards benefiting and caring for these animals as well as the rescue and placement of future animals at the sanctuary.

Older children might be bored with the lack of “high end” exotics, but if your child has never been to a zoo, Popcorn Park Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place to break them in and makes for a great Jersey Shore day trip.

New school board may be faced with tough decision tonight
If you’re looking for the best show in town, forget the St. Al’s Carnival, fireworks at Great Adventure and even the town council meetings. This week’s hottest ticket is the Jackson Schools’ Board of Education’s regular business meeting tonight at 7:30 pm in the Jackson Memorial High School Fine Arts Building.
New school board president Barbara Fiero and her fellow board members will undoubtedly face tough questions about the March 31st decision to charge high school seniors $25 per semester to park their vehicles on school property. The public outcry over this “taxation” of children has been heated as parents and students have been writing to the local papers in protest of this new fee.
The school board’s dynamics have changed since this decision was made as two new members have joined the team, Tracey Murnane and Theresa Schiazza. They replaced John Morvay and Marty Spielman in last month’s heated BOE election. Will the new board president open this topic up for discussion and reevaluate the former board’s decisions? Will the new board members vote to overturn the ruling or will they reaffirm the existing decision? Or will the new board be “same as the old boss” and refuse to acknowledge the concerns of parents. Find out tonight and get a front row seat to all the action.

The event included a powder puff game between students from Jackson Memorial High School and was headlined by an intense game between the Jackson Police Department and the New Jersey State Police.
All money collected went to Chesley’s family and if you missed the event and wish to donate, please contact Rachel Brand 732 779 6349.
Jackson Township council president Mike Kafton was on hand along with councilman Scott Martin to start the ceremonies as the JMHS girls went head to head in an impressive 40 minute powderpuff game that was as intense and as exciting as the men’s game that followed. I was on the lookout for local school board members and administrators but either I missed them or they were a no show, but many district faculty members came out to show their support for one of their children.
Girls from the Jackson Jaguars national championship winning cheer squads were also on hand to cheer the Jackson Police team while the non competitive younger squads cheered on the victorious NJ State Police team. The game started on a high note from the Jackson Police Department with a long touchdown pass, but it was all downhill from there as the State Police squad schooled the local police department on the gridiron. Ok, in all seriousness, it was a good game for both sides and we really wanted the local team to win of course, but it just wasn’t in the cards. Both sides played their hearts out for Chelsey and the event seemed to be a success.
Again, if you missed the event and are interested in making a donation, contact rachel at the number above to get the details. Remember this week, the pop warner club will be holding open registrations on Wednesday, May 20th between 7 and 8pm. Visit http://www.jacksonpopwarner.org/ for more information and directions. Pop Warner football and cheer are great team building activities and from the support they have given to a child in need and showed their true colors as a supportive family friendly organization goes beyond the field.
Somebody forgot to tell the Jackson Police Department this was not the Super Bowl. This second and 10 play sent the JPD quarterback scrambling to the right with a huge pass to the receiver for a touchdown pass and reception worthy of ESPN replay. The final score was 28-15 after trailing 21-9, the Jackson Police Department made a 4th quarter comeback attempt to bring the game within 5, but a quick retaliation touchdown by the State Police with a few minutes sealed the deal.
Enjoy these pictures from the event.
